A major cornerstone of road safety is recognizing and respecting the rights of cyclists to share the roads. Like all other vehicles, bicyclists have a lawful right to be present on our highways, so we must be aware when cycling around us to create a safe environment for everyone involved. By showing respect and courtesy towards cyclists whenever possible, motorists can contribute to a safer experience for both parties.
Here are a few tips from Bob-Boyd Lincoln, Inc. for sharing Columbus, OH roads safely with bicyclists:
- Give cyclists plenty of space - at least three feet when passing - and never pass them too closely.
- Always look around before turning or changing lanes, and ensure no cyclist is in your blind spot.
- Don't honk at cyclists, this can startle them and cause an accident.
- When stopping, leave a few feet between your car and the cyclist in front of you.
- Don't speed, give cyclists enough time to react to changing traffic conditions safely.
- Use your turn signal, so cyclists know when you turn or change lanes.
